Biological Oceanography Techniques–Biol 497

COURSE OVERVIEW (BIOL 497 – 3 CREDITS)

DATES: DECEMBER 30, 2019 TO JANUARY 6, 2020

Students will study biological oceanography as they learn skills to sail an ocean-faring sailboat. The cruise will begin on the 30th of December, from St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands) and will sail through the British Virgin Islands to reach the final destination of St. Thomas. Students will partake in lessons on biological oceanography and hands on experience conducting experiments on physical and oceanographic experiments.

  • physical and geological data collection
  • sea water chemistry analysis
  • plankton tows
  • snorkeling on Caribbean reefs
  • sailing training

The course will be taught by Dr. Mónica Medina, in addition to SEA faculty.

There are 22 open slots available and the application process is competitive.

FEES AND DEADLINES

Funding to cover course fees is available. Deadline fast approaching! Please check the Student Funding tab for additional information.

The course is approximately $2500 (cost of flight travel not included). Fees cover one night  hotel stay in St. Croix and room and board on the vessel. Student funding opportunities are available through Global Programs and the Eberly College of Science.

$500 due ASAP.  Course seats are held on a first come, first serve basis.

$1000 fee due: September 30, 2019

$1000 fee: October 30, 2019

NOTE: Fees are non-refundable.

NOTE: THE DEADLINE TO APPLY IS OCT. 1 AND STUDENTS WILL NOT BE NOTIFIED PRIOR TO MAKING A  COMMITMENT TO THE PROGRAM.

Scholarships received will be applied to the student’s bursar account. Therefore, it will be necessary for students to front the cost and be reimbursed at a later time. However, students who are incapable of paying for the fees prior to the award transfer, an arrangement can be made with their College of Science money.
