The Eberly College of Science is one of the most recognized and respected science colleges in the country. We offer study in sixteen majors in the life, physical, mathematical, and interdisciplinary sciences.
In addition to traditional lab courses, Penn State scientists “do” science by conducting wide variety of basic and applied research. In fact, close to 40% of all Eberly College of Science junior and senior undergraduates participate in a research activity, contributing to many of the 3,000 ongoing faculty research projects in the college.
This means that many Penn State Science students come to your company or organization with real research experience. Not only have our students mastered basic laboratory techniques, they are also familiar with standard operating procedure, and understand what it means to be a contributing member of a high-quality research team.
In support of successful career development, we have set the following goals for Penn State Science students:
- Students will develop the analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills required in their discipline.
A rigorous problem‐based education provides students with the ability to succeed in real‐world employment or further professional training, and prepares them for a life‐long career of learning.
- Students will develop the technical skills required to be successful in their discipline.
Depending on the field of study, a student’s portfolio might include modern laboratory, mathematical, statistical, data analysis, simulation, and scientific visualization skills.
- Students will develop the ability to communicate scientific information in multiple ways, including oral and written communication.
From collaborative discussions as part of a scientific team to communicating science to non-scientists, ECoS graduates must be able to explain their work to a diverse set of audiences, and in multiple formats.
- Students will gain career-related experience related to their chosen profession.
Participation in research, internships, externships, cooperative education, teaching and tutoring, study abroad, volunteer work, and many other opportunities contribute to the pursuit of a complete and well-rounded educational experience.
- Students will learn professional behavior in all aspects of their profession, including acting in an ethical manner.
Understanding the responsible conduct of scientific research, the ethical treatment of human and animal subjects, publication practices, and intellectual property issues as relevant to a student’s discipline are important components of a student’s education.
